Namibia’s Tax Amnesty Generates N$4.3 Billion in Revenue as Deadline Nears

17 Oct 2024

NamRA's Tax Amnesty Program Provides Relief, Registers Over 528,000 E-Filers, and Waives N$25.9 Billion in Penalties

The Namibia Revenue Agency’s (NamRA) tax amnesty program has generated N$4.3 billion since its launch in April 2023, the agency’s commissioner, Sam Shivute, said Thursday.

Shivute reported that 128,060 taxpayers have participated in the program, with most already making payments.

“The program has so far generated N$4.3 billion in revenue, with N$4.01 billion contributed by businesses, N$164 million by individual taxpayers, N$51 million by trusts, and N$31 million from government institutions,” Shivute said at a media briefing.

The amnesty, which began on April 1, 2023, was introduced to provide relief to taxpayers struggling with outstanding tax debts. It offers a 100% waiver on interest and penalties for those who settle their capital tax debts and submit their tax returns via the Integrated Tax Administration System (ITAS).

“A key objective of the amnesty is to encourage taxpayers to register as e-filers on ITAS. To date, ITAS has registered 528,086 taxpayers, reflecting strong acceptance of this online system,” Shivute said.

Under the program, NamRA has written off N$1.2 billion in interest and waived N$25.9 billion in penalties for accounts where the full capital was settled or no capital was due.

With only 14 days left before the amnesty deadline, Shivute urged taxpayers to act promptly.

“Our offices are open nationwide, and our staff are ready to assist taxpayers with filing their returns and applying for amnesty. Our advice is for everyone to avoid waiting until the last minute. Let’s act now to benefit from this program,” he said.
